In 2017, my longtime collaborator Niki Ulehla and I reached out to my dear friend Filip Salata, a powerful and imaginative performer with a rich history of creation, to work on a piece inspired by the writings of Bruno Schulz, particularly his story collection Street of Crocodiles.

Schulz’s work — with its incredibly detailed and absurd vision of life in a Polish village, refracted through the rich animist vision of his childhood self — is the perfect vehicle for the overlaps our three sensibilities. It’s also for Niki’s work with puppets and objects, and her continuing exploration of the shifts between human and small object scale.

We shared this initial performance of our work at Franconia, where we also hold a regular performance salon. Our work on the project continues…
